About us

We make Tarantula: screenwriting software that keeps your ideas, your world and your characters beside the script. Nothing goes into the script without your yes.

A television crew of the 1960s at work on a studio floor: three cameras on tripods, operators in headphones, a floor manager calling a cue.

Why Tarantula

Tarantula began with one writer’s frustration. Most AI writing tools are built to show what they can do without you: finish the scene, invent the ending, decide what happens next. That isn’t the help a screenwriter is looking for.

Writing a screenplay is a loop, not a pipeline. A line on page 40 invents a location, the location changes the world, and the world changes a character’s past. Most tools leave all of that in a separate document you have to remember to update. Tarantula keeps it beside the script, so the world grows with the pages.

The beta is about making it work for your script.

What’s inside

Tarantula is a set of rooms around one story. Use the ones you need, in any order; every room opens onto the same script.

  • Ideas: a half-formed idea, typed or said out loud, talked through until it’s ready to be a project.
  • Projects: a feature, a short, an ad, a limited series or a TV show, where every season and episode shares one canon.
  • Research: links, pictures and PDFs kept with the project, with a short summary of each PDF and link for the Discussion to read.
  • Moodboard and Explore: boards for how it should look and for the messy thinking in between.
  • World Building: a page for every character who speaks and every place with a scene, made as you write.
  • Story: a beat sheet tied to the real scenes, and your premise, theme, tone and ending on one page.
  • The script: a page that formats itself as you type, with Focus, Read and Dialogue focus a click away.
  • Discussion: a thinking partner that knows your canon, your outline and your characters, reads the latest pages and any passage you highlight, and offers changes as options you choose.
  • Crosscheck: contradictions and lines left behind, flagged a few seconds after you stop typing.
  • Drafts and Export: the versions worth keeping, and a clean PDF or Final Draft file when it’s time to send it out.

What we believe

Creativity is your only limit.

The tool never puts a stage, a gate or a required order between you and the work. Skip a room, start in the middle, change your mind. Leaving a feature alone should feel like a perfectly normal way to use Tarantula, not a gap.

The writer decides.

The AI in Tarantula proposes, flags and suggests. It never writes into your script on its own: every change it offers waits for your yes, goes in the way your own typing would, and can be undone afterwards. A thinking partner, not a ghostwriter.

Each story keeps to itself.

Nothing from one project is drawn on while you work in another. The one exception is a TV show or a franchise you set up on purpose: its seasons or films share one canon, and nothing outside it can see that canon.

Your screenplay stays with you.

Your projects live on your computer, and writing, saving and exporting work offline. When you use an AI feature, what it needs goes through our server to Google’s Gemini. That includes the reading Crosscheck does in the background, a few seconds after you stop typing. The Privacy Policy lists what each feature sends.

Who it’s for

Screenwriters, professional and aspiring: writers who outline everything and writers who find the story as they go. It fits best when your story has a world worth keeping track of, a show with seasons ahead of it or a feature with a long memory. It works just as well when all you want is a clean page that formats itself.

Already writing somewhere else? Bring the script with you: Tarantula imports a Final Draft (FDX) file or a screenplay PDF, and gives its characters and places their pages on the way in.

The beta

Tarantula is in beta, and it’s free for now. There are 25 places, and we read every application by hand, so there’s no first-come, first-served rush. AI use has a fair-use limit. It runs on a Mac with Apple silicon and on a 64-bit Windows PC.

The beta is here to answer one honest question: do screenwriters want their story’s world kept beside the script? We think so. You’ll tell us, and what you tell us shapes what comes next. Apply for a place.

Our colours

Our colours come from the revision pages of a shooting script. Once a script goes into production, each round of changes is issued on the next colour of paper, so the whole crew can see at a glance what’s new: white for the script as first issued, then blue, pink, yellow and green, and on through goldenrod, buff, salmon and cherry for a long shoot.

Tarantula’s own editor issues revisions the same way. On this site the colours mark the pages that aren’t about the product: this page is blue, and the Privacy Policy is green.

Reelo Labs

Tarantula is made by Reelo Labs. It’s a small, independent company in Tamil Nadu, India: creative, passionate people who build tools for screenwriters and filmmakers.
